Five years ago, starting my own business wasn’t part of the plan.

What began as a step into the unknown has grown into work I deeply believe in: partnering with educators, learning alongside incredible leaders, and building something I’m truly proud of.

It’s a little surreal to say I’m still here, still consulting independently, and still energized by the impact. Grateful for every client, colleague, and conversation that’s shaped this journey.

Here’s to the lessons, the risks, the growth… and to whatever comes next.

Loved reconnecting and presenting Differentiated Coaching: Matching Support to Teacher Learning Phases at VATLL.

A saying that we lean on in the Science of Reading movement is "know better, do better" a shortened version of Maya Angelou's “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

And yes, for many educators this accurately describes an important step in their SoR journey: building knowledge about language and literacy they may not have been previously taught. However, that knowledge alone will not help us achieve the shifts in literacy needed to impact student outcomes.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe notes: “It is not enough to have knowledge; one must apply it. It is not enough to have wishes; one must also accomplish them.” Two recent publications highlight this; each examines the impact of LETRS training (via state policy) on student outcomes.

“At that point, I was an experienced educator: a school & district coach, had two master’s degrees and National Board Certification; yet suddenly I was beginning again.

I can’t stop thinking about that moment. The moment where even after all of this time, I was a novice. I vividly remember having to look up phoneme and grapheme during a curriculum training.

In that moment, I felt a mix of embarrassment, confusion, and shame—paired with curiosity, fascination, and genuine excitement. That moment stays with me because it mirrors exactly what many teachers are experiencing now.

Can you relate?

I imagine many educators are having similar experiences. Many of us are exploring this reading revolution while grappling with how it compares to what we thought we knew. Depending on where you are in your science of reading journey, you may be beyond this novice feeling. But I implore you, PLEASE hold onto that experience.

“But classroom observations (& walkthroughs) and feedback, especially emailed, are very passive. We share our “grows and glows” or sandwich our critical feedback between positives then leave the teachers on their own to do something with what we said.

What if that isn’t enough? What if the teachers’ interpretation of our written feedback doesn’t match what we intended?

The teacher implements what they think they understand, and the next time the leader visits, they wonder why instruction feels no different.

In this literacy movement, we are asking teachers to shift A LOT of their instructional approaches and thinking and for good reason. We cannot continue the feedback trap and expect different results. It’s time for leaders to roll up their sleeves and support teachers’ practice.”

I couldn’t resist The Office “they are the same picture” meme on this one.

We lament when teachers say “but I taught them that” when the data shows students didn’t learn “that.”

And yet, we do the same thing to our teachers. We act as though sending an email with feedback or making a handbook will shift instruction and change teacher behaviors.

News flash: if you keep seeing the same thing observation after observation, your emails aren’t working.

I couldn’t resist The Office “they are the same picture” meme on this one.

We lament when teachers say “but I taught them that” when the data shows students didn’t learn “that.”

And yet, we do the same thing to our teachers. We act as though sending an email with feedback or making a handbook will shift instruction and change teacher behaviors.

David and Meredith Liben have not only influenced my journey with their books, articles, and IROS course, but they’ve been generous colleagues in this work as a consultant. And we FINALLY met in person after knowing each other for YEARS! Having the chance to be in such an intimate space with Kareem Weaver was a dream. Rebecca Harper explained how we can use smaller pieces of writing to scaffold up to longer pieces.

The Libens reminded us that comprehension is built on knowledge, vocabulary, habits of mind, and teachers who make thinking visible. Read-alouds aren’t for teacher breaks, they’re essential bridges. Simple texts can build knowledge, but only complex texts build coherence.

Kareem Weaver challenged us to look in the mirror: Who are we as leaders when our teams are exhausted? Literacy is the lifeline for kids navigating trauma and “love is a lesson plan.” Are where clear on whether our materials have evidence of working? Are we DOING OUR JOB?

Laura Stewart pressed the courage to lead: literacy is foundational, implementation is multi-year, and integrity matters. Effective practice × implementation × context = outcomes. ALL means ALL.

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction ELA team & the Office of Early Learning Team emphasized clarity in standards, long runways for rollout, and staying the course. Foundational skills are rising, but comprehension gaps need attention. The promise is simple: when families send us their children, we will teach them to read.

We aren’t done. We are only just getting started. A special shout out to Gin Hodge who surprised me with a heartfelt introduction. You are truly one in a million!

“Time is the hottest commodity we have in education. We are constantly trying to figure out how to get more of it. We talk about how to decrease bathroom breaks, how to minimize transitions, how to squeeze in the minimum number of minutes for recess, etc.

These are worthy efforts. We only get to work with our students for approximately 180 days per year, with about 5-6 hours of instructional time. When so many schools are pressured to make gains that require more than a year’s worth of growth, we have to squeeze instruction into every precious second. (That’s if we aren’t battling a chronic absenteeism problem, which has decreased but not to pre-pandemic rates - read more here).

How can we maximize instructional time during the time we have? In addition to the previous considerations, let’s focus on what we are doing DURING instructional time rather than how to create more of it.”
